Help to find the right course for youand $800 to spend on training.
Skill-Up is the Victorian Government program to retrain workers who have been retrenched. The Skill-Up program provides free training to help workers upgrade their skills or develop new skills that will assist them to find another job.
The Victorian Government gives money to TAFE colleges who will give workers help and advice to find the right course. Workers can get up to 80 hours of free training or $800 to spend on a course at any Registered Training Organisation. The Skill-Up officer at the TAFE will pay for the course directly.
So, if you are facing retrenchment, contact the TCFUA as soon as you can. The TCFUA will then organise for a TAFE to visit your workplace and explain ‘Skill-Up’ to you before you leave. You can sign up then or you can make an appointment with the Skill-Up officer at the TAFE to sign up at another time.
You have three months from the day you leave work to sign up for the ‘Skill-Up’ program. You can access this assistance even if you have got another job.
You have nothing to lose from signing up. Once you sign up the Victorian Government will give the money to a TAFE to spend on you. You don’t have to access the training but if you sign up then you can access it – if and when you want to.
The courses available cover all sorts of things like getting a fork-lift licence, English language training, computer skills as well as certificates for a range of courses like Aged Care, Child Care, Warehousing, Retail, Hospitality or Safe Food Handling. The courses may be available part-time or full-time, in the evenings or the weekends, or you might want to do a course that only lasts a few days.
Remember that it’s never too late to do a training course! Many courses at TAFE have been designed for older people and for people who want to improve their reading, writing, English language or computer skills.
Call the Union on 9639 2955 to sign up. We can talk to you about the program so that you can be very clear about how it will help you.
